The Singing Little Mermaid

Once upon a time the Fairy God Mother and the King of the Gnomes went on a trip to the ocean. The King of the Gnomes was one of the Fairy Godmother’s favorite people. It wasn’t because he had flaming red hair the color of a firecracker going off. Nor was it because of his strong body that was solid as the rocks that hugged the earth. It wasn’t even because of his blue eyes that looked like tide pools when you looked deep within them. The reason why the Fairy God Mother enjoyed the company of the Gnome King was because he was very wise and had a good heart. It was a bright, beautiful day at the ocean. It was one of those days when it was neither too hot, nor too cold. It was just right. The seagulls were flying over their heads. The waves were flapping on the beach, making the music that nature creates. This beautiful beach that the Fairy Godmother and the Gnome King were visiting had a very special name called ‘Whale Back Beach.’ It was given this name because a very huge rock stood out from the shoreline that looked just like a giant whale. The seagulls liked to sit on this rock, watching people passing by in hopes of having scraps of bread thrown at them. Throwing bread scraps into the air to feed the gulls was one of the Gnome King’s favorite things to do. He loved to watch the gulls catch the bread in mid-flight. You might not know this, but in Fairyland where two different bodies of water meet, such as two streams joining, making one big river - or in this case, a river joining the ocean - it was considered to be a place where magic could happen. It was in such a place where all the nature spirits would gather and play invisibly behind the landscape. Well, Whale Back Beach was such a place! And very close to Whale Back Rock was a magical fresh water river that flowed from the inland into the ocean. As the Fairy Godmother and the Gnome King walked down the beach enjoying the sunshine and fresh air of the day, the Fairy Godmother stopped and stood in front of the waves. She heard singing. This type of singing was of a very high pitch that emitted a haunting sound. With her inner ears she could hear the singing voice in between the sounds of the waves.. The Fairy Godmother was gifted and she could hear and see many things others could not. The music between the waves contained the most beautiful heavenly voices. The Fairy Godmother enjoyed standing with her feet squishing in the wet sand, listening to the beautiful music the sea sirens were making. It was a magical moment! When the siren’s song stopped, the Fairy Godmother looked down at her feet. The gentle waves, splashing up against her feet, brought two gifts upon the shores. She picked up both gifts with her two hands and looked closely at what had been given to her. In her right hand was a piece of driftwood that had been worn smooth from the waves. It felt so good to touch. At a closer look, she noticed the driftwood had the shape of a fish tail on one end. As she studied the wood even closer, she could see a face and body of a mermaid that had taken shape the grain of the wood. Many times the Fairy Godmother could see the nature spirits showing their faces in the shapes of rocks, wood, and even clouds. One just had to look closely to find the spirits of nature. “This was certainly a beautiful gift,” the Fairy Godmother thought to herself. Then the Fairy Godmother opened her left hand. There was a rock that fitted perfectly in the palm of her hand. This was the second gift from the sirens of the waves. This rock had all kinds of layered colors of gold, brown and even black. As she looked closer at the rock, she noticed it was shaped just like a whale. One of the rock lines even made the whale appear as if it was smiling. The Fairy Godmother looked up from her treasures, and turned around to the King of the Gnomes to share her gifts with him. There, on the shore, patiently awaited the Gnome King, because he understood that sometimes the Fairy Godmother was living in her own enchanted world. She ran up to him and shared the magic of her findings. The Gnome King nodded his head in agreement, as he witnessed this wonderful magic given to her by the ocean sirens. The Fairy Godmother put the mermaid and the rock whale into her shoulder bag as she continued to walk down the beach with the Gnome King. The sun began to set. The Gnome King and the Fairy Godmother watched all the cloud people gather together in the evening sky. They were painting a beautiful picture in the sky for the setting of the sun. It had been a beautiful day. But now it was time to return home. When the Fairy Godmother got home, she emptied the sand from her shoes and walked over to a shelf in her room that held many of the treasures she had found in nature. There were smooth pebbles, shells, crystals, and a sand dollar or two. Even a starfish had its place upon this shelf. She placed the whale rock and the driftwood mermaid between her other treasures. The Fairy Godmother was tired from the day’s events and knew it was time for bed. She crawled under her down comforter and fell fast asleep. Back on the shelf, sparks of light began to fly. The mermaid within the driftwood began to move! Swirls of sparkly light began to shine from within the driftwood!. Even though other items on the shelf had gathered some dust, they too began to awaken from their dormant state! The starfish began to radiate sparkly light from the center of its heart! The whale rock slowly began to move and spout streams of light from its blowhole! The pebbles seemed to glow in the dark and the crystal seemed to shine brighter then ever! The mermaid became alive with magic and everything on the shelf seemed to follow suit. Then in a very clear and high voice you could hear the mermaid singing, “Ouwee-Ouwee-Ouwee.” She was used to singing between the waves in the great blue ocean. She nervously cleared her throat as she found herself in these strange surroundings. Since all in all she seemed to be in good company, she broke out into a song: I am a Singing Little Mermaid singing at the sea, My hair wraps around me as it flaps in the breeze. The barnacles like to talk as they cling to the rocks, The seals bark away in the ocean spray. The dolphins deeply dive for they are very very wise… I am a Singing Little Mermaid, singing a siren’s song. Sunning on the rocks with my Golden tail, Listening with my heart to the mighty whale. Starfish are shinning in the deep blue sea, Blessing upon blessing are coming to thee. I am a Singing Little Mermaid with an Ocean Song. Open your heart and you can sing along. Looking in my mirror, without any fear, Reflecting my inner light until it shines so bright. Sands of irritation are pearls waiting to be born. Oysters give them freely to those willing to be. I am a Singing Little Mermaid and this is my golden tail. Some call me a siren but I only like to wail. Shells, pearls and corral are precious to just a few, But a wide-open heart gives a heavenly view May the waves roll in and the sea roll out Sparkling shells are all about. But look much deeper And you will see Absolutely nothing is creating thee. I am a Singing Little Mermaid singing at the sea. Open your heart and you can sing with me. A golden glow came straight from the mermaid's heart and made everything on the shelf come alive and glow. Each piece upon the shelf began to tell it’s own story and how it got to the Fairy Godmother’s house. There was so much excitement in this little corner of the room. Even the grains of sand left on the whale rock seemed to glisten with light. Everything was alive and full of spirit! The Singing Mermaid said, “Let’s all sing about our home, the Great Mother Ocean.” The starfish and sand dollars agreed and the shells and pebbles cried out ‘Hallelujah.’ Every grain is sacred ground, every wave is holy sound. Ref.: Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Oh, Hallelujah… Mother Ocean come to me, open my heart and set us free. Ref.: Every fish learns in school all about God’s holy rule. Ref.: Surf and sand, wind and rain, learn from us and be the same… Ref.: Rhythm and flow, ebb and tide, deep within, God resides. Ref.: Seaweed clings, tossed by waves, teaching us to give away. Ref: Sea lion pubs, they ride the waves, teach our inner child to play. Ref.: Every droplet makes a wave wash across my shores today. Ref.: The little Mermaid brought all the memories of the Great Ocean Mother back to all who lived upon the shelf. The gleam of the first ray of light began to shine through the window. Everyone on the shelf rushed to his or her rightful place before the Fairy Godmother woke up. All except the little mermaid of course, for she had been so swept away by the music of the night, that she truly forgot where she had been placed. The Fairy Godmother woke from her sleep and walked over to the shelf in the corner of the room. She looked down at the mermaid and gently picked her up. As she looked deeply into the grains of the wood that created the face of the mermaid, she questioned herself, saying, “I was sure I had placed you on the right side of the shelf last night…” as she stood scratching her head. “I had a strange dream last night. You were singing songs about your home in the sea...” She placed the little mermaid back on the right side of the shelf. As the Fairy Godmother turned around, the little mermaid winked at the starfish. She then happily closed her eyes and fell into a peaceful sleep.
